Your Super Mate

Can I contribute to super after 65?

Short answer

Yes. Since July 2022 you can make personal and salary-sacrifice contributions up to age 75 without a work test. Over 75, only Superannuation Guarantee and downsizer contributions are allowed.

Super contribution rules changed significantly in 2022. The old work test (40 hours in 30 days) is gone for most contribution types.

Age 65 to 75

  • Personal (concessional and non-concessional): Allowed up to age 75 without a work test
  • Salary sacrifice: Same — no work test
  • Bring-forward rule: Available if under 75 at start of financial year
  • Claiming a tax deduction: Still requires the work test if you're 67+ in the year of contribution

Age 75+

  • Superannuation Guarantee: Employers must still pay it
  • Downsizer contribution: Still allowed (up to $300k from sale of your home if you're 55+)
  • Voluntary contributions: Not allowed

Why it matters

Post-60 you can usually withdraw tax-free, so recycling savings through super — putting money in, then drawing it out — can be a powerful tax play. Get advice before doing this; the ATO watches “contribution reserving” schemes closely.
